Make a Life that Matters Through Clarity and Discernment
Those who identify themselves as being creative love the idea of thinking outside the box, but Ling Wong, a self-described “intuitive brainiac” who works with creative people for a living, says having structure helps organize her life. Being productive, for her, means being able to respond to demands, either from her family as a wife and mother of two boys or her clients, in a timely manner.
Just because I’m home doesn’t mean I’m not working. That’s another thing that a lot of people, especially people who wear lots of hats — woman, mom, wife — need to train those around them to understand.”
Using fitness as a tool for productivity
Ling is also a fitness enthusiast, making time each day for working out when she feels antsy during her work routine. She’s found several benefits that come from taking time to be active during the day:
- Letting your thoughts marinate
- Giving you something to think about during your workout
- Coming back to your workload with renewed energy and a new perspective
That space when your mind can just go wander is where magic happens.”
At the end of the day
- Knock things off your to-do list that can be accomplished even if there are distractions
- Feel good about the work done
- Get a plan ready for the next day
- If you find yourself with a day you feel has gotten away from you, focus on the one thing you can get done and do it so you can feel good about the day
Coping with Bright Shiny Object Syndrome
Those who identify as multi-talented and multi-passionate, like Ling, know how new ideas and thoughts can lead to distractions from doing what’s important and not spending time and energy on what truly matters. Ling’s strategy for coping with this is clarity and discernment.
- Get clear what you want to be known for
- How are you going to communicate yourself to the world?
- Understand and focus on your strengths
- Distribute your message using that strength (e.g. writing, producing, video, photography).
- It’s easy to become stressed trying to do something new the correct way, especially if it’s a weakness for you, which would lead to mediocrity at best.
- Discernment comes after clarity because you can’t keep your focus where you need to without that clarity.
- This can be applied to any facet of one’s life, not just business.
- When Ling has an idea she doesn’t want to focus on at the moment, she pulls up a Microsoft Word document and writes her ideas there to look at when she can focus on them at a later time.
Productivity tools Ling uses
Two calendars, one digital and one wall calendar.
- Ling finds value in using the printed calendar for planning the bigger picture, such as doctor’s appointments, reminders, and the days her kids are off from school, so she can coordinate her work schedule around those days.
- Sticky notes help as well, since they provide a sense of fluidity — events are not set in stone and can be moved around. (I love this idea and plan to implement it in my own planning!)

OMG…!!! I couldn’t believe what I was listening at the end of the episode. Thank you so much, Laura. It felt weird to listen to my own voice. Enjoyed this episode as well. I guess my struggle is that I have no clarity therefore I have difficult times.
It always feels weird to listen to my voice, too, JiEun! Thank you again for taking the time to call. I appreciate the feedback, and am grateful to have you as a listener. Have a great weekend.
