I recently sat down for a conversation about productivity, self-care, and attitudes about money with money coach Jennifer Hemphill. I did it for the TPW listeners, but I ended up taking notes for myself.
Talking about managing a busy life, and attitudes about money
Typical Day
Jen is a motivational money coach and spends time working with clients one-on-one, as well as coaching women in her Fearless Money Sisterhood program. She is a mother of two boys, ages 13 and 9, so her day includes taking care of her family. An important part of Jen’s day is her workout, which may include a walk or lifting weights. She spends time preparing for monthly Q&A calls, podcasts, and her one-on-one coaching calls.
Biggest Challenges
For Jen, “the challenge with working at home is because you are excited about what you do, you tend to overwork.”
Working from home presents the challenge of never “clocking out.” You have to be able to work through balancing family and work time.
Jen admits she is very good at putting too much on her plate. She said she tends to say she is going to X,Y, and Z done in a certain day and then when it doesn’t get done she gets down on herself.
She has started tracking the amount of time her tasks take so she can be more realistic with her expectations. She’s also started planning her week ahead of time so she can be more realistic about what she can get done if her family has more pressing needs that week.
Managing Your Time
Jen is intentional with her time and uses theme days to dedicate certain tasks to certain days of the week. She has certain days dedicated to recording podcasts, one-on-one coaching, grocery shopping, etc., which allows her mind to be more clear and organized.
Tuesday is her self-care day, where she does something unique and special to take care of herself. Jen has learned to prioritize self-care so she can be the best version of herself and be in a condition–mentally, emotionally, and physically–to help others.

Attitudes About Money
Money is like food and nutrition–it is an emotional aspect of our lives.”
Jen reminded us to keep in mind two aspects to financial success and productivity:
- Know the practical aspects of budgeting, tracking money, getting out of debt, etc.
- Understand your mindset and be in tune with your “money story” and how your background affects how you treat money. You must have the right mindset to really achieve financial success.
Personal finance is personal.”
You can get tunnel vision and feel like you need to do it the experts’ way. But resist that urge. You need to understand your own relationship with money and how you perceive it.
What happens on a day you feel gets away from you?
Jen gives herself permission to not feel guilty about how she is feeling. She takes a break and will take a walk or binge on Netflix movies.
Jen evaluates how much sleep she is getting, how much water she drank, etc. and see how those things might be affecting her energy level.
Jen celebrates the wins, whether big or small, as she admits she is a recovering perfectionist. Her husband has helped her focus on her accomplishments and to celebrate the wins. Jen recommends writing down the wins so you can remember what you have already accomplished.
Secret to meaningful productivity: Be clear on where you want to be and what you want to accomplish.”
